Woke up late after a late night.. Noisy Caravan park, but still nice and we could get the clothes washed. And great hot showers!
After a cookup of eggs and bacon, we headed off to Silverton. What an awesome place! We spent hours looking around.
Went to the Mundi Mundi lookout which overlooks the Mundi Mundi Plains. This is the region where Mad Max was filmed. You could almost see South Australia from here.
Then we went a little further to Umberumberka Reservoir, which was empty the last time Chucky was here.
We turned back and went to the Silverton Hotel. First for a look and to take some photos, then to have a drink in the famous hotel. Films that have used this hotel are "A Town Like Alice", "Razor Back", "Mad Max", "Pricilla Queen of the desert", "Wake in fright", "The missing", "The Craic", and many others.
Another highlight was The Coin Carvery, Mr Andy Jenkins. This gentleman is Australia's best known coin carver and the unofficial best known talker and informant of coin history in Australia. What a fascinating experience. Flora and Bloom were enthralled by the local pair of donkeys.
The next stop was the famous Bells Milk Bar. Step back in time to bee hive hair styles, juke boxes and spiders and milk shakes. The order of the day was chocolate milkshake times two, cherry ripe milkshake, sarsparilla spider, sarspiralla/lime spider and a cherry ripe sundee.
The helpful staff at the tourist information centre satisfactorily explained to Flora and Bloom that Broken Hill was originally named The Broken Hill because the hill appeared broken. Having returned to the twenty first century we ventured to the Miners memorial. Many lives lost underground from rock falls, heart failure and suffocation. The last lost life was 2007.
Recovery was our next stop with Merry and Chuck catching a few minutes kip. Russell could be found repairing a couple of breakages on the Expanda. The local caravan business is well stocked and full of helpful advice for the travelling camper.
The last journey planned for our day was to catch the sunset at the Living Desert sculptures. This is a sight to behold. So tranquil and breathtaking.
Seriously Chuck Moment: Who knows about the way we get to Kevin Bacon? (which he was tying to say 6 degrees of separation)
Day 5 Russellism: I have fixed all the broken stuff!! For now..
Dinner tonight was BBQ steak, sausages and coleslaw and beetroot salad prepared in the infamous and most sought after kitchen appliance the Thermomix. Dessert, as requested by Bloom and Flora, was banana and homemade vanilla custard, once again in the Thermomix. Total cost for tea was $30.
UPDATE: http://www.weatherzone.com.au/news/cold-morning-in-new-south-wales/21949. We did well - our second night was the coldest night in Broken Hill in 14 years!
