Day 3 - Mungo National Park to Broken Hill

Day 3 Diesel dilemma

Budget Buster Tip: fuel up the car where you can (and don't rely on the internet for your information.)

We departed Mungo and headed to Pooncarie for diesel to find that there is no fuel sold there (contrary to the info you may find on the net).

Upon the advice of a friendly local we set off for Menindee with what we had left in our tanks and two 20L Jerry cans. The road was rough and tough-going in places. After a very nervous final 10km both vehicles rolled into the service station. 180L of fuel later and some air in the tyres we hoofed it to Broken Hill on some beautiful bitumen and set up camp in the rain at Broken Hill Caravan Park.

Merry's Comment.. Having not been camping for about 15 years, I thought I was in the safe and confident hands of the seasoned travellers.  Here we were in Pooncarie..  road closed..  having to travel an extra 80kms to around the long way to Menindee, which was not even a scheduled stop at this point.  So we took off, not REALLY KNOWING if we would make it.  There were a few nervous moments, and when we pulled into the best service station we had ever seen, Chucky was running on fumes, and Russell was about a bees dick behind him. We nearly kissed the petrol station attendant... except he had really bad teeth.

Highlights: Menindee Service Station, Pooncarie Playground.

Wildlife: wedge tail eagle, pelicans, pigs, goats, sheep, cattle, horses, kangaroos and emus.

Costing:
Breaky: cereal and toast. Lunch: leftover roast lamb, bickies, dip, straz and sauce sandwich for the kiddies. Cost: nil as all leftovers. Tea: Roast chicken, salad and steamed lemon coconut puddings. Cost $25.
